OEM vs ODM: Which Fit Your Custom Metal Parts

OEM vs ODM decides who owns the design behind your parts. Hebei Weizhi is our brand, established in 2023. It is backed by our Nanpi factory, producing since 1999. We run both models daily, for different customers. This guide defines each model plainly. Then it gives you a decision matrix. Read it before the first call; it shortens every call after.

What OEM Really Means

OEM is the simple case. You own the design; we build it. Your drawings arrive; our presses run. The intellectual property stays with you. We hold your files and your dies under contract. We do not reuse your geometry for another customer. If a competitor asks us for “the same bracket”, the answer is no. Most of our work runs this way. Our OEM metal fabrication projects page shows the model end to end.

What ODM Really Means

ODM flips the ownership. You give a brief: function, load, space, environment. We return a design you can approve or adjust. The design is ours until you license it. That distinction drives both the price and the risk. We have shipped ODM parts that customers rebranded and sold as their own. That is the model working as intended. You can see a few in our custom metal parts cases gallery. The point is not secrecy. It is clarity about who owns what.

OEM vs ODM, Side by Side

Item OEM ODM
Design origin Your drawing Our proposal from your brief
IP owner You Us, until licensed
Typical lead time Quote after drawing check Adds 1-2 weeks of design
Tooling Built to your drawing Built to the approved design
Best for A defined product A new product, concept or cost target
Your main effort Writing the specs Making the decisions

OEM vs ODM is a fit question, not a quality question. OEM fits a product you have already designed. ODM fits a product you have only described. The matrix below tells you which one you actually hold.

Who Pays for the Design

  • OEM: you pay nothing for design; you paid your engineer.
  • ODM: a design fee, or the fee folded into unit price.
  • ODM at volume: the fee amortizes like tooling.
  • Either way: the ownership line goes in the contract.

Ask any ODM supplier how the design fee is handled. A clear answer names the number and the ownership. A fuzzy answer protects a future dispute. The same discipline applies to your dies, which you always own under OEM.

The Decision Matrix

  • Full drawing in hand? OEM.
  • Function and target cost, no drawing? ODM.
  • An existing part you want cheaper? ODM review first.
  • A new product with a deadline? Prototype before either.

Two rows need a word of caution. The “cheaper part” row: an ODM redesign works only if function is pinned down first. The deadline row: our sheet metal prototype service validates either route in days, not weeks. The prototype is where both models become one: metal, dimensions, decisions.

How We Run Both

  • OEM: free DFM check on your drawing, then the quote.
  • ODM: brief interview, then a proposal with options and prices.
  • Both: prototype before tooling, FAI before the run.
  • Both: your files tracked by project number, access in writing.

The full-process metal fabrication service page covers the factory side of both models. The model choice changes who draws. It does not change how the metal is made, or checked. That is the part that keeps your supply honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?

OEM: you design, we build. ODM: we design from your brief, you approve. The ownership line drives the price.

Who owns the design under OEM?

You do, always. We hold your files and dies under contract. We never reuse your geometry for another customer.

Does ODM cost more?

It adds a design step. The fee is fixed, or folded into unit price at volume. The total is stated before you commit.

Can I move from ODM to OEM later?

Yes. Once the ODM design is proven, we can transfer the drawing and die files. The contract sets the fee.

Do you sign NDAs for OEM drawings?

Yes, before we see the file. The NDA names the scope, the parties and the duration. We return it with the quote.
