Custom Metal Brackets: Types, Specs and Sourcing

Custom metal brackets are the smallest part on the drawing and the one that holds the most. A bracket carries a load, aligns a component and survives the handling in between. Get the spec wrong and the assembly rattles, sags or fails at the bolt line. Hebei Weizhi is our brand, established in 2023. It is backed by our Nanpi factory, producing since 1999. This guide lists the bracket types, the specs that belong on the drawing, and the route from file to fixture. Use it to write the first email, with nothing missing.

What a Bracket Actually Does

  • Carries: the load path runs through it, every day, in every position.
  • Aligns: the hole pattern sets the fit of whatever it holds.
  • Survives: vibration, handling and the install torque it was never shown.

Three jobs, and the drawing must pay for all three. A bracket with the right holes but the wrong thickness passes the sample and sags in the field. A bracket with the right thickness but the wrong finish passes the field and fails the audit. The spec is the part, before the metal exists. That is the whole discipline of the category.

The Common Types

Type Shape Typical job
L / angle Two flanges at 90 degrees Mounting to a wall or floor
U / channel Three flanges Clamping a rail or a pipe
Flange mount Flat plate, bolt ring Fixing a motor or a pump
Gusset Triangular reinforcement Stiffening a frame joint
Cabinet / hardware Small formed fixture The fasteners inside an enclosure

The list covers most of the drawing sheets we receive. The shape sets the forming route; the load sets the thickness. A wall angle in 2mm steel is a different part from the same angle in 6mm. The difference is not the price. It is the sag. The cabinet and hardware end of the family is in our post on metal cabinet fabrication. It covers the full assembly, box and all. If your bracket lives inside a box we build, send both drawings.

Material and Finish, in One Line Each

  • Mild steel: the indoor workhorse, powder coated for the finish.Materials for Laser Cutting
  • Stainless: the outdoor and washdown answer, 304 or 316 by environment.
  • Aluminum: the weight-sensitive choice, where the bracket flies with the product.
  • The finish: named once, on the drawing, with the color standard.

The material follows the environment and the weight budget, in that order. The full material table is in our post on sheet metal material. It lists the grades we stock and the mills we buy from. “Metal bracket” is not a specification. The grade is, the thickness is, and the finish is. Three names, and the part is defined.

The Specs That Belong on the Drawing

  • Hole pattern: positions, diameters, and the datum they hang from.
  • Bend lines: the flange heights and the inside radius.
  • Thickness: the number that carries the load, stated once.
  • Tolerance class: the default, and the tighter class where the fit lives.
  • Load, if it matters: the force the bracket should take, stated plainly.

Five lines, and the first three are the ones most often missing. A drawing without the datum is a guess with a title. The drawing checklist, with the file formats we run best, is in our post on the metal part drawing. The classes, default and tighter, are in our tolerance guide. Send the five lines and the quote answers all of them, line by line.

Stamped or Fabricated: The Volume Decision

A few hundred brackets a year run on the laser and the brake. No die, no setup cost, a file and a bend program. A few thousand a year move to the die, and the unit price starts falling with every piece. The break point is named in the quote, in writing, so the switch is a plan and not a surprise. Our high-volume route is in the post on high-volume stamping parts. The die and the cycle rate sit behind it. Either way, the bracket that leaves is measured against the same drawing, at the same checks. The route changes; the record does not.

The Sourcing Checklist

  • The drawing or the 3D file, with the five spec lines.
  • The quantity per batch, and the year plan behind it.
  • The material grade and the finish, with the color standard.
  • The environment: indoor, outdoor, washdown, coastal.
  • The target date, so the route is planned to it.

Five items, one email, and the reply is a drawing check, a route and a price. What happens after the email runs stage by stage. Our guide on ordering from a China sheet metal supplier covers every one. Each stage names the documents you receive, so the bracket project runs on paper, not on hope. If you hold a photo instead of a drawing, send the photo. We measure what is visible and name what is missing, before you redraw anything.

How We Run Brackets

  • 72-hour samples on qualifying parts, with no sample charge.
  • Laser, brake, welding and finish under one roof in Nanpi.
  • FAI on the first article, in-process checks across the run.
  • Mill certificate at intake, final report before the balance.
  • Since 1999 at the factory: 70,000+ different types of custom metal parts, brackets in every batch of them.

The brand signs the contract; the factory runs the machines. A bracket is a small part with a large job. The job is the load, the fit and the years of vibration in between. Send the drawing with the five lines, and the sample arrives with the numbers behind it. That is how custom metal brackets start, on our side of the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for custom brackets?

It starts at single units, made by laser and brake, no die required. Volume moves the route to stamping, and the break point is named in the quote, in writing.

Can you make brackets from a 3D file?

Yes. We run STEP and DXF best, and the flat pattern follows the file. The DFM check marks the bend radii and the hole datums, and the notes come back on your drawing.

What material is best for outdoor brackets?

Stainless 304 for general outdoor, 316 for coastal and chemical air. Powder-coated steel where the cost leads and the exposure is light. The environment decides; the budget refines.

Do you drill, bend and finish in one place?

Yes, under one roof. The holes, the bends and the finish are steps of the same order, so the part walks between them. One owner holds the dimension when it is wrong.

How fast can I get a bracket sample?

Qualifying parts enter the 72-hour sample program, with no sample charge. The sample arrives with a measurement note, and the drawing version is frozen when it passes.
